L1585 - Navvies 'laying drains and bottom ballasting' (S.W.A. Newton's notes) near Finmere, Buckinghamshire, circa 1897. Beyond is a girder underbridge, built by the Railway to carry a road over the new line. This section of the London Extension (Contract No.6 Brackley to Quainton Road) was constructed by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne.
