Title
L1588 - Barley Fields navvy camp, Finmere, Buckinghamshire
Description
L1588 - 'Barley Fields Navvy hut settlements', Finmere, Buckinghamshire (S.W.A. Newton's notes). Built by the contractors, the accommodation that navvies enjoyed during the construction of the London Extension was simple and functional, but it was a huge improvement on the primitive dwellings they had inhabited throughout the rest of the nineteenth century. Navvies living in these huts would probably have worked for Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne, the contractor responsible for building this section of the Line (Contract No.6, Brackley to Quainton Road).
