Title
L3485 - Laying foundations for Soar Lane Viaduct
Description
L3485 - Laying the foundation trenches for the viaduct across Soar Lane. The railway in this area and the nearby Leicester Central Station was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton as part of Contract No. 2. Established and densely populated cities such as Leicester and Nottingham provided Railway designers and engineers with considerable obstacles. Houses like those seen in the background of the photograph had to be purchased and demolished to make way for the new Line. However a number of these structures were reused as navvies houses.
