Title
L3484 - Construction of St. Augustine Street Bridge
Description
L3484 - Construction of the girder bridge at St. Augustine Street (now St. Augustine Road) in Leicester. Two steel stanchions are laid out ready to be lifted upright. A group of navvies take a break from their work and lean against the structure furthest away. Onlookers survey the scene - a young girl to the left, and four smart-looking gentlemen (possibly contractors'). The bridge was built by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton, the contractor responsible for Contract No. 2 (East Leake to Aylestone) of the London Extension, and when complete formed part of a long viaduct built to carry the new Line across much of the city.
