Title
L1605 - Navvies and a steam crane at Bedehouse Meadows, Leicester
Description
L1605 - A line of navvies pose for Newton's camera at Bedehouse Meadows, Leicester, circa 1897. Note the cab of the steam crane that almost appears as a small hut. These machines were built without shelters of any kind, and so to afford the men a small degree of comfort the contractors quickly produced improvised cabs. This one is an unusually tidy and well constructed example. Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton was the contractor responsible for building this part of the Railway (Contract No.2 Leake to Aylestone).
