Title
L1616 - Steam navvy at work near Blaby, Leicestershire
Description
L1616 - Steam navvy and her crew at work on Contract No.3 (Aylestone to Rugby) near Blaby, Leicestershire, circa 1897. However primitive these machines may now appear to be, the construction of the London Extension was the first large scale railway undertaking to benefit from this relatively new technology. The cab to the rear of the engine is a later modification, added by the contractors to provide a shelter for their men. This section of the Line was built by Topham, Jones & Railton.
