Title
L3537 - Navvy woman standing outside cottage
Description
L3537 - Newton offset the cost of his travels along the Great Central by taking commissions for portrait photography from locals in the towns and villages through which he passed. In this image a woman stands outside the entrance to the same cottage seen in record L3536. She has the distinctive features of a navvy woman, and was presumably related to the lady in this photograph. Due to the temporary nature of work on the railways, navvy families frequently moved around the country, and houses were let for periods of time through contraction companies. The run down exterior seen here belies the fact that families often took great pride in the interiors of the places they stayed.
