Title
L1624 - Contractor's railway and locomotive near Blaby, Leicestershire
Description
L1624 - Contractor's railway at a cutting near Blaby, Leicestershire, circa 1896. The photograph is a fine example of how these temporary rails, put down to bring men, materials and machinery to and from the construction site, were poorly laid and maintained. Beyond is a contractor's locomotive and a large group of navvies. This section of the Last Main Line (Contract No.3, Aylestone to Rugby) was built by Topham, Jones & Railton between 1894-1899.
