Title
L1440 - Pit shaft near Highfield Farm, Northamptonshire
Description
L1440 - 'Pit shaft No. 3' (S. W. A. Newton's notes) near Highfield Farm, Northamptonshire, circa 1897. The shafts were built for the construction of Catesby tunnel, the longest tunnel on the London Extension. The pit's headgear was driven by a steam engine housed in the building on the right of the photograph. Note the large piles of bricks that would be lowered to the teams of navvies working below. The tunnel was built by T. Oliver & Son as part of their construction of Contract No. 4 (Rugby to Woodford).
