Title
L3419 - Cutting near the Metropolitan Tower, Wembley
Description
L3419 - This photograph demonstrates construction of the cutting and railway line in Wembley. At this stage retaining walls are in place, although those further in the distance do not appear quite complete. Contractor's lines in place at this stage eventually gave way to quadruple track, which spanned much of the journey from Neasden to Northolt junction. Note the Metropolitan Tower visible amongst trees beyond the cutting. This large steel structure formed the first phase of an ambitious project undertaken by Edward Watkin designed to rival the Eiffel Tower. Construction was blighted by building difficulties, and doomed never to progress beyond the stage shown in this photograph.
