Title
L3427 - Track construction under girder overbridge on the Neasden - Northolt Line.
Description
L3427 - This girder bridge with plate parapets is believed to span a section of the London Extension in Harrow. The Metropolitan Railway Company had previously controlled the route from Canfield Place to Harrow South junction, but in 1905 a decision was reached to lease it to the Great Central Railway Company for a period of 999 years, and an annual rental of £120,000. The line was subsequently widened, signs of which can be seen in this cutting. Loose soil and lack of plant growth on the left slope contrasts sharply with the right hand cutting wall which is covered with grass, indicating that the cutting has been recently extended in this direction. Sleepers from the original double track have been discarded to the right of the frame, to make way for the Great Central's permanent line running under the right arch of the bridge. At this stage a contractors' line ran underneath its left-hand arch, awaiting replacement with two more permanent lines. The bridge itself must surely replace a previous Metropolitan structure, which would have been unable to serve the newly widened cutting. Note also the signal post in the centre of the cutting - generally positioned to the left of tracks, it is likely to have been erected by the Metropolitan Company at a time when this would have been the case.
