Title
L3155 - Widening the viaduct at High Wycombe
Description
L3155 - A wonderful snapshot of bridge construction at the start of the Twentieth Century, this photograph was taken during the widening of the brick arch viaduct at High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. As part of the construction work undertaken for the Great Western & Great Central Joint line, the existing viaduct which had hitherto carried a single line of the Great Western Railway was widened to accommodate the Joint route's twin tracks. Apart from the furthest span, the forest of wooden bridge centrings and somewhat haphazard lengths of planking which have been inserted for the navvies to walk on are still in place between the piers. With the arches almost complete, these timber frames would have been removed soon after the picture was taken.
