Title
L1507 - Clay mill and machinery near Leicester
Description
L1507 - The contractors that built the London Extension were almost self-sufficient in most respects, and where possible, made all of their building supplies (bricks etc.) themselves. This photograph shows one of the clay mills that were established by Henry Lovatt to supply materials for Contract No. 2 - East Leake to Aylestone. A group of navvies stand outside the mill's engine house, alongside the grinding stones that would pulverise the material to make cement etc. Most of the men are equipped with shovels and spades, and there is even a young boy amongst their number. A contractor's line runs across the picture from left to right and a wagon stands to the left. On the right is a formally dressed gentleman who appears to be a foreman of some sort.
