Title
L1509 - Tunnels at Canfield Place, London
Description
L1509 - After leaving the Metropolitan Railway's metals close to Canfield Place, the last leg of the London Extension in to Marylebone ran mostly through tunnels. Here we see the tunnels 'between Canfield Place & Broadhurst Gardens' (S. W. A. Newton's notes) under construction. The tunnel work appears complete with only general tidying of the trackbed and Permanent Way to carry out. Two lines of bolster and mineral wagons stand on the contractor's tracks loaded with bricks and timber. Note the white walls of the building on the right showing the fireplaces where a house has been demolished. The tunnels were built by J. T. Firbank of London Bridge.
