Title
L3332 - Girder occupation bridge in Chacombe, Northamptonshire
Description
L3332 - Photograph of a girder underbridge, with a handrail type parapet measuring 5 metres 17 centimetres in length. This structure carried the Banbury branch of the Great Central over the farmlands of Chacombe in Northamptonshire, between Eydon and Chacombe Road. The line provided a vital link between yards at Woodford and the Great Western Railway and thus saw a high volume of transfer freights. Stations along the route were mainly used as 'block posts'. Tracks in busy areas were divided into sections, governed by the use of tokens. These were exchanged with a signalman at block posts and gave permission to enter a section of line. Only one train was allowed access in either direction, thus reducing the risk of accidents. This type of underbridge is also known as an 'occupation' bridge, designed to allow access, typically for the movement of cattle etc., between adjoining fields.
