The military barracks in Glen Parva, South Wigston, opened in 1881. Originally the depot for two battalions of the 17th (Leicestershire) Regiment of Foot and 45th (Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, they became the depot for the Royal Leicestershire Regiment. During the First World War the barracks were used extensively for training new recruits.

In 1960 the barracks became a training centre for the Foresters, before mostly closing in the late 1960s. The last military regiment officially left in 1997.
