Title
Ventilated corset with removable busk, 1885: Detail of eyelets
Description
Detail of ventilation eyelets around the waist of a ventilated corset with removable busk of 1885.

This distinctive corset from 1885 is made of grey coutil interlined with hessian and includes a number of features designed to make the garment more practical.

Eyelets have been placed around the waist zone of the corset, which helped to provide the wearer with a greater degree of ventilation, and allowed the body to "breathe".

The corset also has a spoon busk, which is held in place by a special lacing cord system. The busk is meant to be detachable to make the corset easier to wash, although the decorative lace around the top of edge of the corset seems to prohibit its removal.
