Title
L1404 - Barley Fields Navvy Camp, Oxfordshire
Description
L1404 - The railway builders, or 'Navvies' as they were known, featured regularly in S. W. A. Newton's photographs. Here at Barley Fields navvy settlement in Oxfordshire, we can see how they lived in purpose built, but temporary, wooden houses. The navvy settlements were communities in their own rights, often with dedicated garden plots or allotments as seen on the right. Several of the navvy occupants stand outside the houses by their gardens. In the foreground is a wooden outhouse, complete with no plumbing whatsoever.
