Title
L1050 - Contractors' 0-6-0 saddletank locomotive, H. LOVATT No. 9.
Description
L1050 - Manning Wardle & Co. 'L' class 0-6-0 saddletank, H. LOVATT No. 9, No. 1215 of 1892. This image was one of S. W. A. Newton's 'foreign' photographs, taken on the Midland Railway approaches to London Road Station, Leicester. At the time, the locomotive was employed on the contract to widen Knighton Tunnel, undertaken by Henry Lovatt of Wolverhampton (circa 1897). In typical Newton style, the locomotive's four crew are posed on and around their steed. Note the split log sleepers on the roughly laid contractor's line.
