Title
L1054 - 0-4-0 narrow gauge saddletank locomotive, LANCASHIRE WITCH.
Description
L1054 - Manning Wardle & Co. 'C' class 0-4-0 contractor's saddletank locomotive, LANCASHIRE WITCH, No. 614 of 1876. She is seen with her two crew at Brackley, Northamptonshire, 15th July 1896. The engine is at work on Contract No. 5 (Woodford to Brackley) built by Walter Scott & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne. Note the engine's dumb buffers, fitted for shunting tipping wagons, and the tall and slender safety valve cover. The locomotive was unique on the Great Central Railway construction project as it was the only narrow gauge engine employed. The gauge being 3' 0' instead of the standard gauge of 4' 8''.
